New decks for an RC battleship model

Worn decks and deck houses on a large radio-controlled model warship, 3D scanned, remodelled in CAD and replaced with new printed parts.

The challenge

A large radio-controlled model warship came in with its decks and deck houses showing their age, with paint chipping and lifting at the edges. The owner wanted the decks rebuilt so the model would look right again. The new parts had to sit on the existing hull, line up with one another and keep the layout of the original fittings. The original pieces and a printed photo of the real ship were used as references.

Our process

  1. Lifted the original deck sections and deck houses off the hull.
  2. Placed scan markers on the original pieces and 3D scanned them.
  3. Modelled new decks and a new superstructure in CAD, checking each model against the scan.
  4. Added details such as railings, deck fittings and a maple leaf on the funnel.
  5. Printed the parts in grey and test fitted the sections on the hull.

The result

The model now has new printed decks and a new superstructure in place of the worn originals. The parts sit on the existing hull, and the deck planking, railings and fittings follow the original layout. Because every piece was modelled from scan data, any part can be printed again if it is damaged later. The owner described the work in a Google review, quoted below.

“…the detail this young man puts into these 3D prints are amazing he works with me not against me…”
